4 HFF Alma Mater of the Young Elite / Forty Years of HFF Munich / 1967 – 2007 Alma Mater: this universal metaphor means the entirety, indeed the totality of the instructors and the instructed. They give this Universitas meaning, symbol, purpose – and a home. Alma Mater also means: unshakable trust in talent! To nurture it, but also to set limits! The creation of an intellectual and artistic home has always been the aim of the HFF. Professional competence, of course! It was no easy birth – 1967/68 – a time of political turbulence. “For the Rapid Dissemination of the Communist Manifesto” was the name of a propaganda film on the “March through the Institutions”. That was the slogan of the radical avant-garde. A brand-new university of television and film in cooperation with Bayerischer Rundfunk. The film library of the HFF is a mirror of society, a document of contemporary history, but also a history of the style of one-and-a-half generations of young filmmakers: history in stories. Not just a “Baedeker” guide of noted directors, filmmakers, TV journalists, producers, and the representative, popular feature and documentary films. Together with the staff of com- mitted teachers, this ensemble has given the HFF excellence and high calibre. A 40-year-chronicle is still to be written. The rivalry between Berlin and Munich inspired. “Mirror, mirror on the wall” – every once in a while! A trial of strength between the best! With the new film academies Ludwigsburg, Cologne, and Hamburg German film culture gained momentum. The elite network of HFF Munich – connecting art, science, the media and market – is a comparative structural advantage. HFF Munich is one of the top ranking film academies: Oscars, German film prizes, Bavarian film prizes, television prizes, “Grimme” prizes; strategic partnerships with television stations, sponsorship committees, producers. 90 percent of the graduates work in media and related areas. Thus: HFF Munich – a success story! We proudly present! Golden words in golden anniversary publications often arouse the suspicion that someone is trying to create myths. “So what”, could be the bold response, to invoke Friedrich Nietzsche. For (quote): Without myth every culture loses its healthy creative natural strength (unquote). Maybe we should put it this way: We love our university! Because we have every reason to do so!
